DefenseFit Research to Practice

Give good movement a clear meaning

A cue such as 'move better' leaves a student guessing. At DefenseFit, a clearer instruction might be 'keep your feet stable' or 'use the same comfortable depth.' That gives coach and athlete something specific to discuss at the next session.

Read the original study: The reliability and measurement error of the movement quality assessment for athletes.

What the research actually found

Two experienced raters assessed 50 adolescent athletes using the Movement Quality Assessment for Athletes. Overall scores were relatively consistent across assessments, while some individual dynamic movements, particularly lateral bounds, were less consistent between raters. This was a reliability study. It did not establish that the assessment predicts injuries or that improving its score improves BJJ performance.

Our practical coaching application

Agree on a small number of observable cues for each exercise. For a familiar squat, use consistent comfortable depth, stable foot contact, and controlled trunk movement. Keep the exercise version and setup consistent when comparing sessions. These are our coaching observations, not a shortened or validated version of the research assessment.

A simple one-minute practice window

  • 0–20 seconds: rehearse 3–5 unhurried bodyweight squats.
  • 20–30 seconds: pause for one clear coaching cue.
  • 30–50 seconds: repeat at a comfortable pace using that cue.
  • 50–60 seconds: rest and transition.

Progress you can explain

Note whether the athlete repeated the chosen movement consistently and needed fewer reminders. Avoid treating a tiny score change as proof of improvement: measurement error matters. Beginners can use a shallower comfortable range. This is a practice station, not a diagnostic screen or a test of who can tolerate the most fatigue.

The self-defense connection

Balance and repeatable movement matter when practicing self-defense footwork and getting back to your feet. Use clear coaching cues during supervised skill practice, while recognizing that a squat assessment does not measure your ability to escape a confrontation.
