Your First BJJ Class in Pharr: What to Ask, Bring, and Expect

Starting Brazilian jiu jitsu does not require knowing the positions, owning every piece of equipment, or already feeling athletic. Your first job is to meet the coach, understand the class, and learn how to participate. A little preparation makes those first conversations easier.

Contact the academy before you arrive

Ask which class is suitable for a first visit, whether it is gi or no-gi, what clothing to wear, and how early to arrive. Confirm the current schedule directly instead of relying on an old social post. Ask about completing the participant waiver and whether any loaner equipment is available.

If the class is for your child, confirm the age group, who must complete the paperwork, and where parents should wait. Share anything that would help the coach explain instructions or support participation. You can ask for a quiet conversation rather than discussing personal information in front of the group.

Bring the basics

  • Clean training clothing approved for the class.
  • A water bottle and any required personal equipment.
  • Footwear for walking off the mats.
  • A willingness to pause and ask questions.

Ask about removing jewelry and avoiding zippers, hard fittings, or other items that can catch on a partner. Follow the academy’s mat and hygiene instructions. Do not assume street shoes belong on the training surface.

Expect to watch, try, and repeat

Class structure varies, so let the coach explain the day’s format. You may watch a demonstration, rehearse with a partner, and receive a correction before trying again. You do not need to remember every detail after seeing it once.

Tell your partner you are new. Ask the coach which part to focus on first. “Where should I start?” and “Can you show that first step again?” are useful questions. Understanding one part is a reasonable goal for a first class.

Learn the stop signals before partner work

Ask the coach to explain tapping and verbal stopping signals before any exercise involving pressure or submissions. Tap early, stop immediately when a partner taps or says stop, and ask whenever you are unsure. Never wait for pain to prove you can tolerate a position.

Live rolling is something to discuss with the instructor, not something you must force yourself into to make the visit count. Tell the coach about injuries, restrictions, or discomfort so they can decide how to modify participation. You can decline an exercise or ask to observe.

Judge the visit by what you learned

Useful first-day milestones are modest: learning the mat routine, recognizing one position, remembering a stop signal, or getting comfortable asking a question. Comparing yourself with someone who has trained for years does not tell you much about your own starting point.

Before leaving, ask which class to attend next and what to practice only under supervision. If you need the instruction repeated or broken into smaller steps, say so. AQBJJ welcomes conversations about how to make learning clearer for each student.
