DefenseFit Research to Practice
Tell your coach more than 'I'm here'
You can attend class and still need a different version of the workout. Before DefenseFit starts, tell your coach about pain, restricted movement, or changes you have made to your training. Include demanding rolling or sparring sessions when discussing today's plan.
Read the original study: Prevalence, burden and risk markers of health problems in HYROX athletes: a 12-week prospective cohort study.
What the research actually found
Researchers followed 89 HYROX athletes for 12 weeks using weekly health questionnaires. Overuse accounted for 73% of reported injuries, and only about half of health problems involved missed training. The average weekly response rate was 62%, so missing reports limit certainty. HYROX combines substantial running with fitness stations; its injury rates and body-region patterns cannot be transferred directly to BJJ or DefenseFit.
Our practical coaching application
The useful lesson is about communication: attendance alone can overlook problems. This observational study did not test whether a check-in prevents injury. Our proposed adaptation is a brief, repeatable conversation before the timer starts.
Four things to mention
- Pain: is anything painful today or after the last session?
- Movement: is any familiar movement restricted or uncomfortable?
- Training changes: have you skipped or modified exercises?
- Recent workload: have you had hard rolling, sparring, or another demanding workout?
Make the answer useful
Agree with your coach on an appropriate exercise version, reduced workload, or rest when needed. Record the adjustment and check how it felt afterward and at the next session. A check-in is not medical clearance; persistent or worsening pain needs qualified assessment. Speaking up gives the coach information to work with. No athlete needs to turn the warm-up into a test of toughness.

The self-defense connection
Self-defense preparation depends on being able to practice consistently and communicate limits. Tell your coach when pain changes your ability to rehearse escapes, footwork or getting up; adapting a session is a practical training choice, not proof of injury prevention.
